From staff reports Nick Shariat scored a game-high six goals and goalkeeper Kyle Corcoran had 15 saves as the Peninsula boys water polo team defeated Chadwick, 17-9, in a Battle of the Hill game Tuesday at Chadwick. Cameron Virjee had three goals for Peninsula (5-3) and Scott Breitenstein, Cole Ryan and Adrian Castillo added two goals each. Tai McDermott scored five goals for Chadwick (2-3) and Kurt Buchbinder added three goals, but Peninsula pulled away after the score was tied, 2-2, at the end of the first quarter. Shariat has used his versatility to become a huge weapon for Peninsula, Coach Albert Garcia said. “What makes him unique is he has a great outside shot, but he can also post people up down low,” Garcia said. “Against a smaller defender, we’ll put him down low and against a bigger guy, he can use his quickness to get an open shot.” Garcia said Corcoran finally had a break-out game in goal. “He came through,” Garica said. “He was awesome.” In another nonleague game … Redondo 14, Torrance 3: Ryan Vint had a game-high nine goals for Redondo (6-4) at the Torrance Plunge. Garrett Smith made 14 saves for Redondo. Ryan McDonald had two goals for Torrance (7-5). Redondo coach Mark Rubke said Alan Rupp played stellar defense guarding McDonald, who had more than 100 goals last season for Torrance. Girls volleyball Megan Saraceno had eight kills and nine digs as Redondo defeated host South Torrance, 25-11, 25-18, 25-18. Taylor Moore had six kills and five blocks and Molly Goldbach added five kills and four blocks as Redondo (6-2) snapped a two-match losing streak. Bishop Montgomery 3, Harvard-Westlake 2: Taylor Nieman had 43 digs and Kristina Cruz tallied 44 assists as host Bishop Montgomery won, 12-25, 26-24, 29-27, 30-32, 15-12. Sarah Prather had 19 kills and 23 digs and Jennifer Edmond added 13 kills and three blocks for Bishop Montgomery (7-3). St. Bernard 3, Immaculate Heart 1: Ashley Thompson had 12 kills, eight digs, four aces and three blocks as visiting St. Bernard (5-7) won, 25-23, 28-26, 16-25, 25-20. Girls tennis Aliya and Shayna Stuart swept their three doubles sets as host Redondo defeated North Torrance, 14-4, in a nonleague match. Della Taylor and Elle Taylor swept in singles. Della Taylor moved to 21-0 this season for Redondo, which improved to 7-0 heading into Bay League play Thursday at home against Peninsula. It was Torrance’s first match without No. 1 singles player Lindsey Guardado, a sophomore who suffered a broken ankle in its first game and will miss the rest of the season. Girls golf Jenny Coleman and Katia Joo shot 2-over-par 37s to lead Peninsula to a 196-210 Bay League win over visiting Mira Costa at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Lori Harper led Mira Costa (3-1, 2-1) with a 39. Megan Inouye and Seethal Montamarri each shot 42s for Mira Costa. Natalie Steiner shot a 39, Kristin Coleman shot a 41 and Ayane Itamura had a 42 for Peninsula (6-0, 3-0). Michi Nitihara led Redondo (0-3 in league play) with a 47. South Torrance 238, West Torrance 304: Shani Yokotake shot an 8-over-par 44 to lead South (3-3, 2-1) at Los Verdes Golf Course. Kelsey Flanigan and Jaimie Takahashi had 47s. West (0-5, 0-3) was led by Jennifer Kim, who shot a 53. JC men’s soccer Juan Hernandez and Kenny Garay scored goals as host El Camino tied Compton, 2-2, in its South Coast Conference opener. El Camino (5-2-3, 0-0-1) led, 2-0, at halftime, but Compton (1-5-1, 0-0-1) scored two goals in the last seven minutes.
