Three Army jawans were on Wednesday injured as Pakistani troops fired from automatic weapons and shelled mortars at forward posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Pakistani troops also violated the ceasefire in the Laam sector by briefly opening fire along the LoC, police officials said. The Indian Army is retaliating effectively and the firing is still on, a Defence spokesman said.“The Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics and mortars in the Poonch sector along the LoC,” the spokesman said.In the firing, three Army jawans suffered injuries. On Tuesday, an Army jawan was killed when Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire along the LoC in Poonch. On October 2, two minors were killed and 12 civilians injured in cross-border shelling by Pakistan along the LoC in Poonch district.Pakistan’s chargeHowever, the Pakistani military on Wednesday alleged that Indian forces targeted civilians along the LoC and killed two children in a mortar attack that hit a house in the Rawalakot sector. A military spokesman said Pakistani troops engaged Indian posts, killing at least three Indian soldiers and injuring five.A brief statement by the military said the Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing along the LoC in Rawalakot and Chirikot sectors. “Unprovoked firing by India targeted locals in Kakuta, Chaffar, Serian and Narakot villages. Mortar rounds hit the house of a civilian, Sakhi Kayani, in Chaffar, whose two children were killed. Pakistan Army posts are effectively engaging Indian posts. Reports say three Indian soldiers are killed and five injured. The Indian posts suffered heavy damage. Intermittent firing continues,” the statement said.(With inputs from Mubashir Zaidi in Karachi)
In yet another case of medical apathy in the country, a man in Bihar capital Patna was forced to carry his 9-year-old daughter’s body on shoulder after being allegedly denied an ambulance by a government hospital. After hospital authorities refused to help him, the distraught man carried his daughter’s body on his shoulder for over 4 km. However, the authorities at the AIIMS hospital refuted the allegations. This is not the first incident when the relatives of a deceased were denied ambulance to carry the body.
Benzema, Sissoko, Matuidi, Valbuena and Giroud were on target in France’s 5-2 win over SwitzerlandForwards Olivier Giroud and Karim Benzema each scored one goal and created another as a rampant France blew away Switzerland 5-2 Friday to take control of Group E and all but seal a place in the next round.Statistical Highlights | Match Photos France has six points and can qualify if Ecuador and Honduras draw later Friday.”It was a great night for us. We hurt them with our quick attacks and with the variety of our play,” France coach Didier Deschamps said. “You can always ask if it’s us who played well or whether the opponent was weak, but I prefer to focus on how we played.”Giroud and Blasie Matuidi scored a minute apart and Mathieu Valbuena added another to give France a 3-0 halftime lead.Benzema made up for a first-half penalty miss with a poacher’s finish in the 67th, and then turned provider for Moussa Sissoko, who made it 5-0 with a neat side-footed effort in the 73rd.”Karim is confirming that he’s in very, very good form. He’s in great shape athletically,” Deschamps said. “His happiness is a joy to behold, he’s one of the best players in the world and having such an efficient player is very important in a competition like this.”Switzerland pulled two consolation goals back as Blerim Dzemaili scored with a free kick in the 81st and Granit Xhaka slotted in the second in the 87th.advertisementBenzema thought he had scored his second – and the goal of the night – but his curling, first-time strike was ruled out because Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers blew his whistle for full time just seconds before the shot.”I didn’t hear the whistle,” Benzema said. “But the most important thing is that we won. I’m happy with my match, but we all played well.”Friday marked the fourth anniversary of France’s infamous World Cup training ground strike four years ago in South Africa, when the players shamed a nation back home. How different things look now.France has scored eight goals in two games and Benzema could even afford to miss a penalty against a poor Swiss side that failed to live up to its reputation as one of the hardest teams around to break down.”I don’t want to put a brake on the enthusiasm. It’s a huge satisfaction within the team but we’re not going to get carried away,” Deschamps said. “We shouldn’t think we’re prettier than we are.”Giroud had distinguished himself the wrong way early on. In the sixth minute, center half Steve Von Bergen came off with blood pouring down from under his left eye after Giroud kicked him in the face.Von Bergen was replaced by Philippe Senderos and things went from bad to awful from then on as Switzerland’s makeshift defense simply could not cope with the ferocious pace of France’s breaks from midfield and the slick movement of its interchanging forward line.”France has excellent individual players and they can go very far in this tournament. When the opponent has such strong individual players, they can move quickly to counterattack,” Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said through a translator. “We have seen France’s potential. They had an explosion of power and this shows the class of this team.”Deschamps had dropped midfielder Paul Pogba, who was lucky not to be sent off against Honduras for aiming a wild kick at Wilson Palacios, warning him that he needs to control his temper better. After coming on as a substitute, Pogba sent an exquisite pass with the outside of his right boot that had Senderos kicking at air, and Benzema finished confidently for his third goal of the tournament. The Real Madrid forward then instigated a move and waited for Sissoko to break down the right, serving him with an inch-perfect pass. The Swiss conceded too easily throughout the game.Giroud jumped above Behrami from near the back of the penalty area to head powerfully under the crossbar in the 17th minute. Then, Valon Behrami gave the ball away to Benzema, who fed Matuidi sprinting down the left, and the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder slotted neatly inside the near post. The Swiss had only one shot on target in the first half, with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris diving low to keep out Mehmedi’s drive. Shaqiri picked up the rebound and scuffed a low shot that rolled just wide. That close miss went unpunished by Benzema, who missed from the spot after being tripped by Johan Djourou in the 32nd. Yohan Cabaye hit the crossbar from the rebound.advertisementIt mattered little as France caught Switzerland with a classic counterattack, Giroud galloping into space down the left and picking out Valbuena at the back post.”Olivier played very well, like all the players did,” Benzema said. “He holds the ball up well back to goal, creates space and helps others to score.”Team Line-ups(from):Switzerland: Diego Benaglio; Stephan Lichtsteiner, Johan Djourou, Steve Von Bergen (Philippe Senderos, 9th), Ricardo Rodriguez; Valon Behrami (Blerim Dzemaili, 46th), Gokhan Inler, Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka; Admir Mehmedi, Haris Seferovic (Josip Drmic, 69th)France: Hugo Lloris; Mathieu Debuchy, Raphael Varane, Mamadou Sakho (Laurent Koscielny, 66th), Patrice Evra; Yohan Cabaye, Mathieu Valbuena (Antoine Griezmann, 82nd), Moussa Sissoko, Blaise Matuidi; Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud (Paul Pogba, 63rd)

Ms. Williams told JIS News that the NSCP will expose participants to both core and technical skills that will empower them to become well-rounded individuals who are able to make meaningful contributions to Jamaica’s social and economic development. Senior Director for Programmes at the National Youth Service (NYS), Alicia Williams, has underscored the importance of the National Service Corps Programme (NSCP) in transforming lives and boosting national development. The programme is specifically designed to support young persons between 18 and 24 years old who are not employed or enrolled in an educational institution.Ms. Williams told JIS News that the NSCP will expose participants to both core and technical skills that will empower them to become well-rounded individuals who are able to make meaningful contributions to Jamaica’s social and economic development.“The NSCP is an intervention of the Government to seek to engage unattached youth who would not normally qualify for jobs, persons without CXCs, and persons who are illiterate and innumerate,” she said“So, these opportunities that the programme presents are brought under one umbrella where persons who need remediation can get that from the Jamaica Foundation for Lifelong Learning (JFLL); they can also get skills training, they can be supported while they are being trained, and they will also get a chance to give back to national development,” the Senior Director outlined. She explained that the programme is a partnership with Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment (HOPE) and includes the implementation of the Learn, Earn, Give and Save (LEGS) strategy.“So, young people who participate in this programme will get a stipend paid by the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) that have engaged them, and from that amount, a compulsory saving is withdrawn and held until they complete the placement component, allowing them to learn while they earn, give back by contributing to society and appreciate the value of saving,” Ms. Williams said. The training component of the programme covers technical area, such as environmental management; geographic information system; infrastructure and construction; registration, verification and audit; hospitality; document management and digitisation and the National Service Enlistment Programme, which is managed by the Jamaica Defence Force. On completion of the training, participants are placed at the various MDAs for a six- to 12-month period.“The MDAs are also encouraged to do on-the-job training… so while we would have given them general training in certain key areas, based on their needs, we encourage our partners to have an orientation which is more tailored to helping participants transition within the specific work placement site,” she said.Ms. Williams added that the transformation is evident in persons who participate in the programme, and urged MDAs to be a part of the initiative, which is “positively impacting lives, families, communities and the society”.

From 1991 to 1992 he was Special Rapporteur on human rights in Kuwait under Iraqi occupation. In his new post Mr. Kälin essentially replaces Francis M. Deng, who served as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative on IDPs from 1992 until his mandate expired in July this year.In a report earlier this year to the UN Commission on Human Rights, Mr. Deng said the estimated number of IDPs has remained relatively flat over the past year at about 24.6 million. But the situation was far from static; more than 3 million people, mostly Africans, became internally displaced last year, but another 3 million were able to return to their places of origin.

The social media site’s import as a driver of political news has been underscored by the lingering controversy of people using it to spread false news stories.Eight per cent of Clinton voters and 7 per cent of Trump voters named Facebook as their main source of election news, Pew said.“That was a pretty important finding,” said Jeffrey Gottfried, senior researcher at the Washington-based think-tank .Facebook doesn’t produce news; members share stories from a multitude of sources and their news feeds tend to reflect the politics of their Facebook friends. With a multitude of websites serving fake news stories with no basis in fact, Facebook announced last month that it would partner with outside fact-checkers to flag particularly egregious examples that are spread on the social media site. While other digital brands like Breitbart News, BuzzFeed, the Drudge Report and the Huffington Post received plenty of publicity during the campaign, they received little attention from the voters surveyed by Pew.Forty per cent of Trump voters cited Fox News Channel as their main source of campaign news, the winner by a huge margin. The second most-cited news source by Trump supporters was CNN, with 8 per cent.“This is very much on par with previous research we have done,” Gottfried said. Pew didn’t ask similar questions after past campaigns, but in a 2014 survey, 47 per cent of conservatives cited Fox as their top news source, he said. The finding shows Fox’s continued strength with conservative voters, and likely explains why the network has taken no change in direction following the ouster last summer of its founder and top executive, Roger Ailes, following sexual harassment allegations.CNN was the top news source named by Clinton supporters, with 18 per cent, Pew said. Although that was twice as much as any other news source, Clinton voters were much more likely to have more diverse media diets. MSNBC, with 9 per cent, was second among Clinton voters. That network was named by only 1 per cent of Trump voters.National Public Radio was another news source held in high esteem by Clinton voters but by few Trump supporters, the survey said. The New York Times was the most-cited newspaper source of news, with 3 per cent of all voters saying it was their top news source, Pew said.Pew found little difference in media choices among Republicans who supported different candidates during the primary, yet real differences between Democratic supporters of either Clinton or Bernie Sanders. For instance, 4 per cent of Sanders voters cited the online forum Reddit as a main news source, with few Clinton voters saying the same.Pew surveyed 4,183 adults who are members of its American Trends Panel between Nov. 29 and Dec. 12. The margin of error is 2.7 per cent among all voters.
Eastern Ghouta, about 10 kilometres outside the Syrian capital, Damascus, and one of the remaining besieged areas in the Middle Eastern country, is home to an estimated 400,000 people who have been almost completely cut off from humanitarian assistance since 2013.“As violence continues to intensify in East Ghouta, thousands of children are suffering in silence,” said Fran Equiza, UNICEF Representative in Syria. “The situation is getting worse day by day. The health system is crumbling and schools have now been closed for almost a month. Sick children desperately need medical evacuation, and many thousands more are being denied the chance of a normal, peaceful childhood.”One hundred and thirty-seven children, aged 7-months to 17-years, require immediate medical evacuation for conditions ranging from kidney failure to severe malnutrition and conflict related injuries. On the last United Nations inter-agency aid convoy to Nashabieh town in eastern Ghouta on 29 November, UNICEF health workers described seeing one of the worst health and nutrition situations since the conflict began in Syria. A severely malnourished two-year-old boy was described as having an arm as thin as a little finger.Nearly 12 per cent of children under 5 years-old in eastern Ghouta suffer from acute malnutrition – the highest rate ever recorded since the start of the conflict in Syria.“Children are still living through so much horror,” said Mr. Equiza. “Now is the time for all sides to do the right thing and to stop the violence.”UNICEF reiterates its calls for unimpeded, unconditional and sustained humanitarian access to all children in Syria, and urges all parties to the conflict and those who have influence on them to protect children at all times and to immediately allow the evacuation of the sick and wounded.Violence has been escalating across Damascus and eastern Ghouta, with a significant increase in rockets and mortars landing in the Syrian capital in the last six weeks. Almost one in three school-age children in Syria – an estimated 1.75 million children, are currently out of school across the country and one third of schools are damaged or destroyed.
