(Eds: updating with more inputs) By Amanpreet Singh New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Sports Ministry has dropped para-sports coach Satyanarayana from the list of this years Dronacharya awardees due to a criminal defamation case pending against him, but made no changes to the names recommended for the Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards. The decision means that tennis player Rohan Bopanna and weightlifter Sanjita Chanu will miss out on the Arjuna awards despite the late push given to their names. “Yes, we have removed the name of Satyanarayana since he has a case pending against him,” a Sports Ministry official told PTI, referring to a defamation case against the coach. “He has to clear his name first and only then he can be considered,” said a Ministry official. Satyanarayana has coached paralympic high-jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu, who won a gold in the Rio Paralympics. Mariyappan is one among the 17 recommended for the Arjuna award this year. Satyanarayana, on his part has had written to the ministry on August 13, saying that a few “jealous” people had launched a campaign against him and he should be given a chance to clear his name. Mariyappan had also written to the ministry, recommending Satyanarayana for the award. But Clean Sports Indias Ashwini Nachappa wrote on August 6, objecting to his name. “We have kept all other names,” added the official. The mails were sent out to the award winners last night after Sports Minister Vijay Goel cleared the file. The selection panel, appointed by the ministry had recommended 17 names, including two para-athletes, for the Arjuna awards. It had nominated hockey player Sardar Singh and Rio Paralympics gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia for Khel Ratna, the highest sporting honour in the country. The ministry chose to stick to the recommendations made by the panel, headed by Justice (retd) C K Thakkar. Goel had the discretion to add names to the list but he chose to approve the recommendations of the panel. There was a request from his BJP colleague and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to add the name of Deepa Malik for Khel Ratna. There was a debate if Rohan Bopanna, whose nomination by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) reached the ministry late, should be added to the list considering that his achievements were comparatively bigger than Saketh Myneni who was recommended for this years Arjuna Award. The tennis fraternity is glad that Myneni, who won a gold and silver at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, has got the honour but strongly felt that Bopanna should have been there ahead of any other tennis player. Bopanna had become the countrys only fourth tennis player to win a Grand Slam when he clinched the French Open mixed doubles title with Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski. He had finished fourth at the 2016 Olympics and there were some in the ministry who felt that if Dipa Karmakar could be given Khel Ratna for a fourth place finish in the Rio Games, Bopanna could also have been considered for the honour. A few others, though, felt that a mixed doubles title could not be compared with Karmakars solo show in gymnastics. Also cited was the impact that the 24-year-old Karmakars performance had on the profile of the sport. Not playing the Incheon Asian Games also seems to have cost Bopanna dear since his decision to play in an ATP World Tour event was not taken well in the ministry. AITA did not send his nomination, assuming that he does not fit the criteria since he has not won medals at any multi-sporting event while representing the country, robbing him of a chance to get the award. Bopanna, however, had the option of sending his application to the ministry. Its only after he won the French Open that he sent his application and even had a meeting with the Sports Minister. Goel had never promised Bopanna the award but it was widely perceived that his meeting with the minister could have tilted the scales in his favour. A Grand Slam title is considered equal to a gold in World Championships and it should make him eligible next year. The Indian Weightlifting Federation had also requested for the addition of Chanus name in the Arjuna list, saying that she meets the criteria and has 45 points, courtesy gold medals at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Championships, besides a bronze at the Asian Championships. However, a member of the selection committee told PTI, “Points was not the sole criteria. If points were the only criteria, then neither S S P Chawrasia nor Cheteshwar Pujara nor Harmanpreet Kaur would have got it. “The achievements were looked at in a holistic perspective. Sanjita has not done anything after the CWG. She did not make even the World Championships.” PTI AT PDS PM PMadvertisementadvertisement

Together their writing has made millions of hearts beat faster with sincere messages that musically represent Mendes himself.”The Joke” (performed by Brandi Carlile)Working with GRAMMY-winning songwriter and producer Dave Cobb, singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile added to her canon of originals with “The Joke.” The twin Hanseroth brothers, Phil and Tim, who co-wrote “The Joke” also play guitar and bass on the song. “I wrote ‘The Joke’ about a reckoning and a revolution and a time that’s coming when we’ll realize that love has already conquered the world and pick it back up,” says Carlile about the powerful and uplifting song.”The Middle” (performed by Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey)”The Middle” shows off the vocals of GRAMMY-winning country singer Maren Morris, over a highly danceable beat. It was co-written by the six-time GRAMMY-winning diva and three collaborators. Singer/songwriter and punk guitarist Anthony Rossomando rocked with previous nominee Andrew Wyatt and five-time GRAMMY-winning songwriter and producer Mark Ronson. Gaga has added her starring role as Ally in the film to her impressive series of distinct expressions of self, inspiring millions to draw on the inner creativity and courage that can be heard in the lines and melodies on “Shallow.””This Is America” (performed by Childish Gambino)Released in May, “This Is America” and its sensational cultural commentary helped usher in a big summer for GRAMMY winner Childish Gambino, real name Donald Glover. The song was co-written with long-time collaborator Ludwig Göransson, who also had the lead “Music by” credit on the soundtrack for 2018’s Black Panther. Our oral history of the pair’s Awaken My Love anticipates the messages of “This Is America” by Glover’s comment that the GRAMMY-nominated album had been a challenge to create while “America [was] going through a lot.” H.E.R.Photo by Prince Williams/Wireimage Cardi BPhoto: Dan MacMedan/WireImage TLC Photo: Alison Buck/Getty Images Backstage At The 2019 GRAMMYs | Photo Gallery 61st GRAMMY Awards: Full Nominees & Winners List Who Is Eligible For The Best New Artist GRAMMY? Comment Share your voice Tags Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is considering running as an independent presidential candidate in the 2020 election. Joshua Lott/Getty Images It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. Since late January, Twitter has suspended several accounts that pretend to support Howard Schultz’s political ambitions but are actually pushing other agendas. On Thursday, Twitter suspended three more accounts for violating its policies.Schultz hasn’t officially announced he’s running for president, but the businessman has said he’s considering an independent run for the White House. Since his announcement in late January, several accounts pretending to support the former coffee shop executive have popped up on Twitter. On Thursday, Twitter suspended the accounts @GaysForSchultz, @PresSchultz2020, and @HowardJSchultz. The @HowardJSchultz account described itself as “Millennials for Schultz.” Before they were suspended, all three accounts were posting content from the “alt-right,” a loosely knit movement of white nationalists and neo-Nazis.The @GaysForSchultz account responded to tweets about Ruth Bader Ginsburg conspiracy theories, while the @PresSchultz2020 account posted anti-Muslim content alongside posts supporting Schultz’s presidential ambitions. The three accounts violated Twitter’s “Fake Accounts” policy, according to a person familiar with the suspensions. While parody accounts of Schultz are still on Twitter, these three accounts were considered “fake and misleading.”Schultz didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. One of the suspended accounts. Screenshot by Alfred Ng/CNET Creating fake social-media profiles tied to politics isn’t new. During the 2016 US presidential election, Russian operatives made fan pages on Facebook and accounts on Twitter supporting third-party candidates, such as Jill Stein, with the intention of pulling votes away from Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate. In late January, Twitter suspended the accounts @Blacks4Schultz and @GOP4Schultz, the former for operating multiple accounts. The @Blacks4Schultz account had a stock-photo image of an African-American man with “Howard” edited onto his shirt. The most prominent account was “@Women_4_Schultz,” an account created by Jacob Wohl, a conservative activist who bragged to USA Today about his plans to create fraudulent Twitter profiles and promote candidates considered less likely to defeat President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. Wohl’s fake accounts, along with his own Twitter profile, were suspended last week for violating the social network’s policies, “specifically creating and operating fake accounts,” a Twitter representative said. The strategy was taken right out of Russia’s disinformation playbook, by setting up fake accounts to allege support for candidates who have a weaker shot at the White House, Ben Nimmo, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s digital forensic research lab, said. The other suspended Schultz accounts aren’t tied to Wohl, according to a person familiar with the situation. Some accounts pretending to support Schultz are still active on Twitter. The social network allows parody profiles as long as they don’t violate Twitter’s rules. That could be why Wohl’s @Women_4_Schultz account was suspended while @WomenForSchultz, a parody of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s “Women for Cohen” account, still remains. Social networks are gearing up for a flood of disinformation as the 2020 US presidential election draws closer. It proved to be an effective tool for Russian operatives in 2016, and US intelligence officials now consider disinformation a global threat. The slow drip of Schultz accounts getting suspended is just a small example of the flood of disinformation social networks are expecting over the next year. “One of the main worries after the Russian operation was exposed was that users in America would copy it,” Nimmo said. “We’ve already seen reported attempts in the Alabama special Senate election, targeting potential Republican voters. Now it looks like we’re seeing similar activity targeting Democrats. It’s a bad sign before 2020.”Originally published on Feb. 28. Update, March 4 at 7:04 a.m.: To add details on why these accounts were suspended. 1 Politics
Be clear about the income sources before depositing gold over 500grams under the gold monetization scheme (GMS), as the government will levy income tax on such deposits on failing to name the sources. The idea behind the move is to make sure that the scheme does not get exploited to convert black money to white.”This is not a black money immunity scheme and normal taxation laws will be applicable,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.Aiming to reduce the gold imports by the country, the government last week approved Gold Bond Scheme (GBS) and the GMS, and said that there would be “no relaxation in know-your-customer (KYC) guidelines or the reporting requirements of banks.””Depositors may be informed by the banks that as per CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) instructions…in the course of IT search u/s 132, gold jewellery to the extent of 500 grams per married lady, 250 grams per unmarried lady and 100 grams per male member of the family need not be seized by tax authorities, but the tax penalties, as applicable, will be levied,” Livemint reported, citing a government internal note dated 15 September.Imposing tax on gold deposits exceeding 500 grams is also aimed at making clear the tax implications from taking part in the scheme. The estimates shows gold held by households in the country currently stands at over 20,000 tonnes.”This is a very good move. It will be wrong to give any kind of special dispensation to any asset class. This provides clarity to small retail depositors that they will not be subject to income-tax scrutiny and at the same time, ensures that the scheme is not misused. Why should retail depositors be subject to scrutiny under this scheme when they are not asked any questions when they use their gold holdings as a collateral to get a loan,” said Somasundaram PR, managing director, India, World Gold Council.According to the guidelines, banks are not permitted to use gold deposits to meet their statutory liquidity ratio and cash reserve ratio requirements. In the earlier draft, banks were allowed to do so.India imports about 800 to 1,000 tonnes of gold annually and is the world’s second largest consumer of the yellow metal. The two schemes are expected to help in curtailing country’s metal imports.
