KUSI Newsroom, Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitter KUSI Newsroom February 8, 2019 27-year-old man arrested after stabbing in Logan Heights SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A 27-year-old man was arrested this afternoon after allegedly stabbing and inflicting life-threatening injuries on a 59-year-old man during a fight in Logan Heights.The suspect, identified as Ryan Baker, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the stabbing about 1 p.m. in a shed or room attached to a garage in the 2900 block of Imperial Avenue, according to San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims.It’s unclear what sparked the fight, Heims said.“Officers arrived on scene and found the victim with multiple stab wounds and the suspect a few feet away laying on the ground,” Heims said.The victim was taken to a hospital, Heims said. Dan Cohen AUTHOR The Navy is developing plans to construct detention facilities for tens of thousands of immigrants on a combination of active installations, outlying landing fields and one closed base, according to a draft memo obtained by Time magazine. The document outlines plans to build “temporary and austere” tent cities to house 25,000 migrants at two outlying landing fields near Mobile, Ala. The memo proposes constructing facilities for up to 47,000 people each at two sites in California — Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Southern California and the former Naval Weapons Station Concord in northern California. It proposes studying the possibility of housing migrants at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., as well.The memo recommends Navy Secretary Richard Spencer approve the plans. It estimates the Navy would spend about $233 million to construct and operate a facility for 25,000 people for a six-month period. Last week On Base reported that the Trump administration is planning to house up to 20,000 unaccompanied migrant children on military installations following a request from the Department of Health and Human Services to have facilities available as early as July.

.UNESCO on Saturday added eight pre-Islamic Iranian archaeological sites to its World Heritage List, the UN agency announced at a meeting in the Bahraini capital.The sites collectively appear on the worldwide list as the “Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars region (Islamic Republic of Iran)”.A province in modern-day Iran’s south, Fars was the cradle of the Sassanid dynasty, which appeared at the start of the third century.After the fall of the Parthian empire, the Sassanids ruled territory that, at its peak, stretched from the west of Afghanistan to Egypt, before falling to the Arab conquest under the Umayyad caliphate in the middle of the seventh century.”These fortified structures, palaces and city plans date back to the earliest and latest times of the Sassanian Empire,” UNESCO said.With the latest addition, Iran now has 24 sites on the heritage list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
8 get life term for killing 3 policemen in PabnaA speedy trial tribunal in Rajshahi sentenced eight members of an outlawed party to life term imprisonment in a case filed for killing three policemen in Bera upazila of Pabna in 2010, reports UNB.The convicted are — Jahurul Islam, Hashem alias Khokon alias Bacchu, Joson Mollah alias Javed, Nizam Fakir, Rafiq alias Joita Rafiq, Ayub Ali, Shukur Ali Sarder and Jahangir Alam alias Kana Alam.Among them, Jahurul and Bacchu were tried in absentia.The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to serve one year more in jail.According to the prosecution, sub-inspector Kofil Uddin, nayek Wahed Ali and constable Shafiqul Islam of Dhalarchar police outpost, were shot dead by the outlaws at Maldar Hat badh in Bera upazila on 20 July 2010.Constable Rashidul Islam filed the case with Bera police station on the next day.Later, police pressed chargesheet against 15 people.After examining all the records and witnesses, tribunal judge Anup Kumar Roy, handed down the verdict acquitting three other accused.Four accused died during the trial.

He looks fondly at the rust-colored command module.“It’s still a beautiful machine,” Vaughan said. “The first time I saw it was before it launched, so it looks a lot different than it did then. There’s a lot of memories everywhere I look.” The artifacts are almost 50 years old now, but even small details have been preserved. Toward a low-cost ‘artificial leaf’ that produces clean hydrogen fuel More information: Liping Liu. “Feasibility of large-scale power plants based on thermoelectric effects.” New Journal of Physics. DOI: 10.1088/1367-2630/16/12/123019 Liping Liu, Associate Professor at Rutgers University, envisions that thermoelectric power plants would look like giant barges sitting in the tropical ocean, where electricity is generated by heating cold, deep water with warm, shallow water heated by the sun. Liu has published a paper in the New Journal of Physics in which he analyzes the feasibility of such power plants.”This work is about the new idea of large-scale green power plants that make economic use of the largest accessible and sustainable energy reservoir on the earth,” Liu told Phys.org, speaking of the oceans. This is because the sun heats the surface water to a temperature that, in tropical regions, is about 20 K higher than water 600 m deep. Essentially, the surface water acts as a giant storage tank of solar energy.As Liu explains, thermoelectric power plants would work by harvesting the energy of ocean waves to pump cold water from a few hundred meters deep up through a long channel. As the cold water nears the surface, it enters a heat exchanger where it is heated by surface water on the outside. The heat exchanger acts as an electric generator, as its tubes are made of thermoelectric materials that can transfer heat through their walls and directly convert temperature differences into electricity.Large-scale, ocean-based thermoelectric power plants would have many advantages. For one, the “fuel” or temperature differences are free, unlimited, and easily accessible. Also, the plants do not take up space on land. Because they have no moving solid parts, they would have low maintenance costs. In addition, the power output does not depend on the time of day or season. And finally, the method is green, as it does not release emissions. In the new paper, Liu shows that large-scale thermoelectric power plants wouldn’t need to operate at extremely high efficiencies to be economically competitive; instead, the key would lie in engineering simple structures such as laminated composites in order to support mass production. These improvements focus on the conversion capacity, which, unlike efficiency, can be improved by orders of magnitude. In other words, because the fuel is free and in limitless supply, large-scale thermoelectric power plants could make up with their sheer size what they lack in efficiency.The cost of generating electricity varies by source. According to the US Department of Energy, the estimated cost per year of one megawatt of electricity in 2016 is about $0.83 million for conventional coal plants, compared to $1.84 million for photovoltaic power plants. Liu’s analysis estimates that a thermoelectric power plant could generate electricity for less than $1.84 million, although an exact estimate is difficult at this stage. This estimate is for a thermoelectric generator that lasts for 20 years and uses ocean water with a 10 K temperature difference as fuel. If water from geothermal sources is used instead, the temperature difference could be 50 K or more, resulting in an even higher power gain and lower cost per watt.Overall, the analysis shows that thermoelectric power plants look very promising and could contribute to solving the world’s energy problems. In these designs, the conversion efficiency is the most important factor because the fuel accounts for the largest portion of the cost. Most commercial devices have a conversion efficiency of around 5% to 10% of the ideal Carnot efficiency, with state-of-the-art devices achieving efficiencies of up to 20%.
