“It does take a while to learn, there is a learning curve to it but hopefully once we do get a chance to meet with our players, we can cut that curve down a little bit by tweaking some things, by using different terminologies they are familiar with and eliminate some of the steps along the process.” Nevada officials reach out to D-backs on potential relocation Cardinals expect improving Murphy to contribute right away What an MLB source said about the D-backs’ trade haul for Greinke Top Stories The Arizona Cardinals have a new defensive coordinatorwho spent the 2010 season as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers’coaching staff. It just isn’t either of the names that were heavily toutedfor the job over the last month.Steelers’ defensive backs coach Ray Horton, not Keith Butler or Dick LeBeau, was named as the Cardinals’ replacement for Bill Davis Wednesday, agreeing to a three-year deal with the team. Prior to joining Ken Whisenhunt’s staff he spent the lastthree seasons working with Pittsburgh’s secondary, a position he waspromoted to in 2007 after Mike Tomlin was hired as head coach. D-backs president Derrick Hall: Franchise ‘still focused on Arizona’ Horton may lack experience as a defensive coordinator but he certainly doesn’t lack in confidence. During his introductory press conference Wednesday he made it very clear that he is ready for the challenge of turning around the Cardinals defense.“This team was in the Super Bowl two years ago. We were in the playoffs a year ago. We just fell a little short last year. We aim to be right back there in the playoffs pushing for a Super Bowl bid. There’s no question about it. We’re going to improve on defense.“What we’re aiming to be is one of the top defenses in the league, bar none,” the new coordinator said.He also wasn’t afraid to share with the media what his defensive style will be.“We’ll be an aggressive, disciplined, downhill attacking defense.“Our motto is going to be: ‘Go get ’em’. We’re going to make the quarterback very uncomfortable,” Horton said.Horton added on 620 KTAR’s Gambo and Ash show that he plans to build on the Cardinals number one ranked red zone defense and will bring the personality of Pittsburgh’s defensive style with him. “It’s a 3-4 attacking style defense, schematically very sound,” Horton said. 0 Comments Share
The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Top Stories As much stock as we try to put into the third preseason game — and I am guilty as charged — it’s equally well known that the fourth preseason game is a virtual waste of time. From a fan’s perspective, at least. Sure, there are some depth chart issues to be worked out. Who makes the final 53, etc., etc. Mainly it’s one big exercise in risk avoidance. All those players that mean something to you, keep them as far from the field of play as possible. But I keep thinking that if there is another team or GM out there who liked Williams as much as the Cardinals did a couple of years ago, then perhaps a big performance can convince them that he’s worth the risk. It seems like a long shot, but then again, everything about Williams seems like a long shot at this point. Thursday for the Cardinals is no exception, yet with one exception: Ryan Williams. Technically, I suppose the running back falls in the category of the aforementioned depth chart issues, but we all know there is a little more going on here. Despite his best attempts and legitimate hard work, the former second-round pick has found it virtually impossible to stay on the field. And Thursday’s game against the Broncos could represent his crossroads moment. Which got me thinking, what if he has a big game?Is it his 12th round knockout punch (Gambo’s metaphor)? The key piece of evidence that wins the case and keeps him on the team?Is his performance dismissed since it will likely come against those who are in a similar position, fringe NFL players desperate to prove they belong?Or — and this is my wild card here — can it be used to convince another team to trade for Williams? It seems unlikely to me that a team would give up anything of value, even a late round pick, for a running back with the history of Williams’. It seems these days as if the running back is looked upon like a brake pad for a car…it’s a part designed to wear out. So why would you trade for one that may already finished? (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri) 5 Comments Share Top Stories It’s only February. But while the conclusion of the 2018-19 season is still freshly in our minds, it’s time to look ahead to the 2019 NFL Draft.Although the Arizona Cardinals possess the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft, it’s not known what the team will do with the draft spot.Taking this into account, ESPN’s Nick Wagoner spoke with 11 NFL scouts during the Senior Bowl — which gives teams a good look at some of the college players entering the draft — who gave their vote as to what the Cardinals are planning to do come draft time. The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Although it seems like a “preferred move” for Arizona, only three votes were in favor of trading the pick. But what about the third option? If the Cardinals decide to take a different route, some NFL scouts believe the team will turn to Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.“Bosa will have some risky stuff with the way the season ended. Plus, Williams could give them something on the interior they don’t have.”With two votes, however, Williams is the least likely option for the Cardinals. As a redshirt sophomore, Williams made 71 tackles, 19.5 for loss and 8.0 sacks. Pairing the defensive tackle with Jones could prove to be a dynamic duo in the desert.Though he’s not as polished as Bosa — Williams won’t turn 22 until December and is entering the draft as a redshirt sophomore — his upside could make him appealing to a team like Arizona that already boasts a top edge rusher.Jones, who made 49 tackles and 13.0 sacks in 2018, could get some relief from opposing offenses with a player like Williams in the trenches. While it only received three votes, the consensus among scouts was, given the chance, the Cardinals would make the move to trade down for added picks.“Given the chance” are the keywords here.“I’m sure they’d love to move down, and if that’s what they really want, they can probably find a taker. The thing for them will be finding a good enough deal to make passing on those top guys worth it.”“They will get offers. I just wonder if the offers will be for a team looking for a quarterback or someone like Bosa. If it’s for a QB, it would be better for them.”With an injury-riddled offensive line, the Cardinals could make the trade to bring in a few linemen to help shore up the protection for quarterback Josh Rosen.Picking later in the draft was a strong suit for Arizona last year.Mason Cole, the lone starter on the line to play in all 16 games and every offensive snap last year as a rookie, was selected in the third round.Christian Kirk, who flashed his potential before going down with an injury, was a second rounder, while Chase Edmonds, David Johnson’s backup, was picked up in the fourth. Offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, selected in the seventh round, started six games as well. Of the 11 votes taken, three options presented themselves for the team.Garnering six votes, the most likely possibility, according to the scouts, is Arizona going for the best available player in Ohio State’s Nick Bosa. What scouts are saying:“I just don’t think they’ll be able to trade for a package that would be worth missing out on Bosa unless someone just falls for one of those QBs.”“It’s so early, they probably don’t even know yet, but Bosa is the logical choice here in January.”“Someone could fall in love with a QB … or heck, maybe the coach [Kliff Kingsbury] isn’t married to the [current] QB [Josh Rosen]. But I’d think that was a big factor in landing that job.”Although the 21-year-old played in just three games, compiling 14 tackles, 4.0 sacks and a forced fumble before electing to have abdominal surgery in 2018, Bosa still put together a decent resume at Ohio State.Related LinksCardinals DC Vance Joseph plans to play aggressive 3-4 defenseThree ESPN writers tab Cardinals as favorite for No. 1 pick in 2020Arizona Cardinals sign former Falcons CB Robert AlfordArizona Sports NFL Mock Draft Tracker: Who’s next for the Cards at No. 1?PFF ranks Cardinals’ Peterson as 60th-best NFL player in 2018In 29 games played as a Buckeye, the defensive end recorded 77 total tackles, 29 for loss, to go along with 17.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Longoria, Ferrera, Saldana and more rally for Latino votes MIAMI – Eva Longoria, Rosario Dawson, Zoe Saldana, America Ferrera and Gina Rodriguez took to the streets of Miami, leading hundreds of people while chanting “Si se puede” or “Yes we can” in attempt to rally people to vote ahead of Election Day.While the actresses were looking to improve voter turnout overall, they were specifically targeting the Latino community on Sunday as they marched down in Little Havana.“This cause of getting people out to vote is one of the most important things we can do as citizens,” Longoria told The Associated Press in an interview earlier in the day. “It’s our job.”“We’re not out here as celebrities or actors or our professions,” said Ferrera. “I’m the daughter of immigrants, I am a true blue American, I bleed red white and blue.”The group came together not only at the rally, but at a studio earlier also to film spots for various candidates. While the actresses are known for their Democratic leanings, they insisted the purpose was to get everyone engaged.“I vote as an American and I’m out here rallying my fellow Americans to get out their vote because when we show up, our democracy will work better for us,” Ferrera saidThe Latino vote is expected to be key in several races across the country. The actresses acknowledged that the bloc is not a monolith in terms of its ethnic makeup or its political affiliation.“We’re Mexican, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, but we have way more similarities than we do differences,” Longoria said. “For me it’s about finding that common ground, and not just with Latinos, but Americans.”Added Saldana: “I think it is our duty to find our similarities, which are our great strengths, bind them together and use them as one voice to speak to the American public about the importance of representation.”Dawson acknowledged that many Americans are dispirited by the tone of politics and may avoid the polls. She said she’s trying to encourage people despite the rhetoric of the day: “It’s so disgusting and it’s so disenchanting and disheartening.”Still, she said she is undeterred.“I have a 15 year old,” Dawson said. “She doesn’t listen, she emulates, and if mom sits this one out, what is that really conveying to her? (photos by Sue Kirsch, text by Rebecca Weeks) March 23, 2018East Housing is coming along beautifully, with final touches being added daily. Our woodworking team built a gorgeous built-in workspace, and this time around that team included Bryce, Erik, Randall, and Patrick. This progress is part of the East Housing Renovation Project, which is well on its way to completion, and includes upgraded ADA amenities and a large workspace for students. Another recent East Housing project included the installation of decorative wood panels, installed by Joel, the Construction Manager, and the workshoppers Kevin, Bryce and Yui. The process was overseen by Planning Manager Kevin Pappa.Lighting fixtures, accented with Soleri silt cast ceramic bells were installed as well. The fixtures were designed by Kevin Pappa and welded by Jona, our metalworking expert. The ceramic tops were made by Erin, an alum, based off an archival image of Soleri’s work.
